Muscle Pain Q & A
What causes muscle pain?
Muscle pain is typically the result of strains caused by overuse or injuries caused by direct trauma. Many people develop muscle pain after strenuous activities like exercise and heavy lifting.
Underlying medical issues like fibromyalgia, lupus, and Lyme disease can lead to flare-ups of muscle pain.
Stress is also a common cause of muscle pain. Too much stress causes tension in your muscles and, over time, small knots can form in the connective tissue. These knots, known as trigger points, are areas of overly tight tissue within the muscle that cause tenderness and pain.
When muscle pain persists despite rest and home care, you should schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Advanced Interventional Pain Management to rule out serious health conditions.
How is muscle pain diagnosed?
During your evaluation for muscle pain, Dr. Abraham or Dr. Stuckey spends time reviewing your medical history and your symptoms.
They physically examine the areas of muscles that are tender or painful and may ask you to make certain movements to evaluate your range of motion. To rule out underlying infections or medical conditions, you may need a blood test.
How is muscle pain treated?
You can often find relief of muscle pain with heat and ice therapy, over-the-counter pain relievers, and rest. Other treatments for muscle pain include:
Massage
Massage therapy is also a good way to relieve excess stress and muscle tension while improving blood circulation.
Exercise
Stretching exercises are also beneficial for relieving tension in your muscles. If trigger points make stretching and exercising too painful, Dr. Garcia or Dr. Abraham may recommend trigger point injections.
Trigger point injections
Trigger point injections involve the insertion of a needle into the knots in your muscles. The needle delivers a mixture of steroid medications to relieve inflammation and relax the muscles and an anesthetic to numb the nerves around the knot.
Following your injection, you can resume your usual activities but should avoid strenuous activity for a few days. Your provider can recommend exercises to reduce stress and prevent additional trigger points from forming.
